History

History of Elizabeth Evatt Chambers

The Honourable Elizabeth Evatt is a retired groundbreaking legal professional. Her remarkable career moved professional mountains, contributing to much-needed law reform, and blazing a trail for future generations of Australian women entering the world of Legal Practice.

As the inaugural Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia, her influential tenure redefined the nation’s family law landscape. A fervent advocate for the rights of families and children, her pioneering efforts set precedents that continue to guide the practice of family law today.

It is no wonder that in 2004 barristers Taanya Lewis and Meredith Dickson (now Her Honour Judge Dickson) chose to name their new chambers after this jurist. Taanya said there was, at first, doubt and trepidation as they wondered if anyone would continue to brief them once they went out on their own. There was no book of instruction, just a great deal of determination and hard work that grew Elizabeth Evatt Chambers into what it is today, namely a home to Adelaide’s finest Family Law Barristers.

Following Her Honour Judge Dickson’s appointment, Taanya relocated chambers to number 75 Angas Street. Just a few doors down from its original location, the new setting is a grand, two storey dwelling radiating a welcoming yet imposing presence.

Elizabeth Evatt Chambers’ name is proudly displayed on a brass plate in front of one of South Australia’s heritage houses, a restored attached grand house that was built between the years of 1881 to 1882 for Billin and Wight ginger beer brewers.

The building exudes a gentle charm with its leadlight glass, reminiscent of its early origins, and a vintage brass letterbox flap. The soft bluestone façade, framed by black pillars and detailed balustrading is a testament to South Australia’s architectural past.

It is a serene backdrop for a Chambers that represents dedication and warmth but also embodies a commitment to delivering excellence in Family Law.
